Our Forever Bed Project

Try to outsmart a greyhound when it comes to his or her bed!

We custom made our kennel beds to fit the raised platform and filled them with what we thought was just the right amount of fill. Everything looked and felt great...and then the dogs arrived and then stuffing started to fly!!!! Greyhounds are so creative. Some can open zippers, pull off zippers, open up corners or can just plain dig the center out of their bed. Some are not happy until they take their neighbors bed ...right through the cage bars!

On behalf of most of our greyhounds we have to say that they love the comfort of their beds and just look in awe as a few of their room mates are busy with their butts up in the air having a good time trying to unstuff their beds.

Soon we had a cart full of damaged bed covers and a warehouse palllet full of stuffing. We called out for help.

Three volunteers have been stopping by every week or so and picking up and returning repaired beds. Their suggestions have led us to experimenting. We have used Velcro in place of some zippers, replacing our liner with a more durable knit liner that we designed like a duvet cover. We also have tried sewing on a soft square of fabric to the top just in case the dogs felt the cover was too stiff.

Since out revisions, the beds have been holding up longer. Some dogs just don’t want a bed and like a blanket or comforter.

We are very grateful to Susan Albaugh, Rita Korn and Pat Zemma for being so faithful in helping us out with our forever bed project.
